Following a decade long absence, Volkswagen make a return to Super Bowl commercials with their latest spot titled “An American Love Story”, an epic cinematic homage to the brand’s 75-year history in America.
Opening with the arrival of the first VW Type 1 vehicle, aka “The Beetle”, the film blends archive and recreated footage to chart the rise of the brand and its role as a design icon.
The spot also celebrates Volkswagen’s many cultural touchstones over the years, with the Herbie films, The Simpsons and Star Wars all being featured.
The ad comes from Johannes Leonardo with archive footage handled by STALKR, and is one of three Super Bowl LVIII spots featuring our work. The second being Coors Light and the third being Dove.
