Battling Sharks and a Hurricane in Netflix’s Thrash

The Netflix-exclusive film Thrash arrived on the streaming platform this month. The high concept survival-thriller follows the survivors of a catastrophic hurricane which destroys their coastal town’s sea wall.  As the waters rise and debris fills the submerged streets, the stranded residents must fight to survive not only the destruction around them, but also the sharks which hunt through the ruins.

Thrash comes from Hyperobject Industries, the production company founded by director and long-time STALKR collaborator Adam McKay.  The film blends disaster spectacle with a stark look at the climate crisis. Escalating, increasingly violent hurricanes and their cascading consequences sit at the centre of the film’s world, grounding its high-concept premise in environmental reality.

STALKR contributed extensively to sourcing and licensing the film’s visual material, including extreme weather footage, shark imagery, and immersive “haptic” shots that heighten the film’s visceral impact.

Since its premiere on April 10, Thrash quickly rose to become the No. 1 streamed film worldwide on its first day of release, topping charts in 90 territories, including the United States.
