A plastic wasteland for Surfers Against Sewage

“Wasteland” paints a bleak picture of the world as we know it if we don’t start addressing the serious environmental impact of pollution.

Surfers Against Sewage aims to build strength, hope, resilience, and action around single-use plastics and throwaway plastic culture. As SAS states, “ocean plastic pollution is one of the biggest global environmental threats of our age.” “Wasteland” takes a compelling look at a new mass forming in the Pacific, a continent of plastic thrown away, five times the size of the UK, and toxic to the entire planet, narrated by the one and only Imelda Staunton, of Vera Drake and Harry Potter fame.

M&C Saatchi developed the creative for the spot and approached us to help find unique and powerful imagery to compliment the mission of this award-winning charity. We searched through a variety of editorial sources, charity archives, and individual sources watching countless hours of often very difficult and heartbreaking footage to find just the right balance of disaster and truth for the narrative. Even more impressive is that on a pro-bono job like this one, we were able to get so many of the sources we worked with to donate their footage because everyone believed so strongly in the work that Surfers Against Sewage does.

“We’re really proud of this job, both creatively and because of the message,” STALKR EP Oliver Merchant concludes. “We’d like to think that STALKR’s contribution in helping shape this film is key and that by using our collective experience, talent and determination, we were instrumental in making it what it is.”
